Presentation Evening and AGM

The annual general meeting of the association will be held on Monday 8th December  at 7.30pm at Sportspark, UEA, Norwich. A feature of the evening will be the presentation of awards to the outstanding athletes of the year. With an Olympic athlete and a considerable  number of athletes achieving international status this has been an important year for Norfolk athletics.

Congratulations to three more Norfolk athletes who have gained international selection. Chris Baker( high jump), Rachel Stringer (800m) and Michael Fraser (400m) have all been picked for the Commonwealth Youth Games in India in October. Chris and Rachel have been picked for England while Michael will represent Malta.    

Norfolk easily win the Group C (minor counties) team title. In fact the team would have finished 3rd in the Group B counties competition. The junior girls team having won the Group C team award were actually the best county team in the whole country. 

Norfolk`s schools athletes met with great success in the English Schools championships at Gateshead.

There were three individual winners. Rachel Stringer defended her senior girls 800m championship with a time of 2mins 8.75 secs. Danny Clayton won the JB hammer with 51m 59 and James Senior won theIB 1500m steepelchase with 4 mins 25.18 secs. Congratulations are also due to James for being selected for England in the Schools International match at Bedford. He won that event too with a time of 4mins 26.51 secs.

The junior girls relay team of Victoria Mitchell, Laura McDonald, Victoria Mitchell and Clieo Syephenson finished 2nd in a time of 49.58 secs. Second places also went to Laura McDonald in the javelin with 39m 84, Sophie McKinna JG shot 11m 19, Victoria Williamson JG 75m hurdles 11.46 secs (11.32 heat), James robinson SB 3000m 8mins 25.6 secs, Chris Baker SB high jump 2m02. Harriet Lucas was 3rd in the SG 200m 25.49 secs. Danni Nimmock was 4th in the SG 3000m 10mins 9.25 secs and Megan Thomas finished 5th in theJG discus 28m 91. James McLatchan was 6th in the IB triple jump 13m 75, Jenna Cannell 7th IG hammer 37m 86 and Clieo Stephenson 7th JG 100m 12.6 secs and James Jackson 8th IB 3000m 9min 00.81.

Olympic Selection

Barbara Parker may have lost her British steeplechase record at the UK Olympic trials, but she has been selected to represent Great Britain in that event in the Beijiing Olympic Games. She becomes the first Norfolk athlete to be selected for the Olympics since Mike Tagg and Mary Green in 1968.

Congratulations are due to Barbara Parker. Originally from Kings Lynn and now based in Florida,  Barbara recorded a time of 9mins 37.08 secs for the 3000m steeple chase. This is a new British record and easily beats the Olympic qualifying mark. Barbara becomes the first Norfolk athlete to hold a British senior record.

Congratulations also to Rick Ward who broke the 1m 50secs barrier for 800m  when he ran 1min 49.47 secs in Manchester on 31st May. He is the first Norfolk athlete to do this.

 

The Norfolk Schools championships will be held at Sportspark, UEA, Norwich on Saturday14th June. The first event will be at 11am. Entries close on Wednesday 4th June.
